What is academic advising?
Starting college can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone. The Advising, Career & Transfer (ACT) Office is here to help you understand your classes, stay on track, and plan for what comes next. Find your advisor and sign up for advising anytime!
What to expect from your academic advising session
After your academic advising sessions, you will be able to:
- Create a degree plan and build a class schedule
- Understand transfer steps, college policies, and key deadlines
- Use advising and career tools (My San Jac, GPS, SOS)
- Access campus, community, and mental health resources
- Receive support for academic, personal, and career goals
- Stay informed by checking email and Blackboard regularly
- Come prepared, ask questions, and take responsibility for decisions
- Maintain privacy under FERPA guidelines
- Schedule appointments in advance and review academic progress each semester

Once you enroll, you’ll be matched with an advisor who knows your program and your campus, so you’re getting guidance that fits you.
Students are assigned a program advisor based on their program and campus after enrollment and once the semester begins. If you have not yet been assigned a program advisor, you can find your advisor here.

On a first-come, first-served basis, you can check in at the welcome desk at your
nearest campus’ Welcome Center to meet with a program advisor without an appointment.
