Adult Education & Literacy (AEL)

Adult Education & Literacy Grants

We encourage students of all ages and backgrounds to apply for financial aid and grants.

This financial aid is a grant, not a loan, and does not need to be repaid. Awards are based on financial need and support students enrolled in Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) programs. AEL courses help adults strengthen foundational skills, earn a high school diploma or GED, and prepare for careers such as nurse aide, payroll accountant, HVAC technician, and other high-demand fields.

The following is a list of the free courses we offer through our grants:

  • English as a Second Language (ESL) and Civics
  • Adult Basic Education (ABE) are classes for students scoring below a secondary level on academic placement tests.
  • Adult Secondary Education (ASE) are classes for students scoring at a secondary level on academic placement tests. This class includes preparation for a high school equivalency (HSE) test (similar to GED).
  • Internationally Trained Professionals (ITP) is a course for English Language Learners (ELLs) or others who have already completed a Bachelor's degree or professional credential from another country, and want to learn about getting a job or more education in the United States.
  • Career Pathways / Integrated Education and Training (IET) are job training classes in healthcare (nurse aid), business (payroll accounting), HVAC, IT (CompTIA A+), and many other jobs. These IET job training classes also teach English language and other academic skills.

Pre-requirements and information:

  • Registration and Pre-testing are required before any instruction begins to determine program eligibility.
  • A valid, unexpired, current government-issued photo ID is required for all participants at registration (i.e., state driver's license, passport, state ID).
  • Registration is mostly done online, however some testing may need to be done in person.
  • Students 18 years and older are eligible for courses. For high school equivalency (HSE) courses similar to GED, students must be 16 years and older.
  • Daytime, evening and online classes are offered.
