Adjustments and Recalculations

Receive additional aid? Under TEC Section 56.0094(b), the State of Texas requires your financial aid package be reviewed to make sure you're not overawarded in your need-based funding.

What Happens If I Receive Additional Aid?

When you receive outside scholarships or grants, your financial aid package must be reviewed to ensure you are not overawarded in need-based funding such as the Pell Grant, SEOG, TEOG, TPEG, the Promise Scholarship, or other institutional scholarships. To take full advantage of available gift assistance, you are strongly encouraged to complete both the FAFSA and the Foundation Scholarship Application early in the processing period.

Awarding typically begins in April and May before the start of the fall semester, so it is recommended that you submit all applications prior to April each year. You should regularly review your financial aid dashboard in SOS, particularly the Offer tab, which outlines details about your awards and the cost of attendance.

If you receive additional educational assistance, you should promptly notify the financial aid office to ensure your aid package is optimized for grants and scholarships. If adjustments are necessary, the office will prioritize retaining all grant and scholarship funds to the fullest extent possible, making reductions first to loans and work-study awards. It is important to note that the Promise Scholarship is a last-dollar program and may be adjusted if other grants or scholarships are sufficient to cover your directly billed costs.

Financial Aid Displacement Advisory

Financial aid displacement occurs when your financial aid is reduced due to receipt of a private scholarship or other reasons identified in this advisory. This practice occurs in Texas and should be taken into consideration while you are applying for financial aid. The institution to which you are applying is providing in this application a list of recommendations describing how you can maximize your financial aid and ensure that you are prepared when financial aid displacement occurs. You are encouraged to reach out to the Financial Aid Office to receive advice on how to avoid financial aid displacement. Visit the Student Financial Aid Programs webpage for more information.

State-funded gift aid is most commonly revised or reduced because of:

Additional Aid

Additional gift aid received from a private source, such that the student’s total gift aid exceeds financial need or cost of attendance.

Reduced Cost of Attendance

Reduced cost of attendance as a result of dropped classes, a change in housing status, or withdrawal from the institution, among other causes.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Failure to meet satisfactory academic progress requirements or other merit-based criteria for the student’s gift aid.

Enrollment Status

A change in enrollment status that renders the student ineligible for certain gift aid programs.

Administrative Processes

Failure to complete required administrative processes or submit documentation by established deadlines.

Student Aid Index

A change in the student’s Student Aid Index as a result of verification, updates, and/or corrections to the student’s financial aid application which affects eligibility for some forms of gift aid or the amount of gift aid the student is eligible to receive.
