Featuring ceramics as vessels for ecological memory, observation, and knowledge beyond the human
PASADENA, Texas – The San Jacinto College Central Campus Art Gallery is pleased to present Artifacts of the Delphinus Resonance, a solo exhibition by San Jacinto College Central Campus ceramics professor Christopher St. John. On view Wednesday September 16th through Friday October 23rd, the exhibition considers the ceramic vessel as a conduit for ecological memory, observation, and knowledge beyond the human.
Working across sculpture, drawing, sound, photography and moving image, Artifacts of the Delphinus Resonance extends an ongoing investigation through an evolving archive of ceramic forms, field recordings, speculative documents and transmissions that blur the boundaries between scientific inquiry, mythology and material culture.
Rather than illustrating a fictional world, the project invites viewers to consider what kinds of knowledge become possible when attention is directed beyond the human, towards insects, weather, fungi, tides, and planetary processes.
Gallery curator, Carmen Champion, said, “Historically the vessel is one of the most enduring forms in material culture. As an organic, natural material, clay carries a record of history that permeates the object. Through St. Johns interdisciplinary approach, students and visitors alike become witness to age old art making practices intersecting with contemporary technology to heighten their awareness of human exchange and permeability.”
About the Artist
St John’s work is informed by field observation, natural history, philosophy, and
the long histories of ceramic technologies. Through these overlapping disciplines,
he develops frameworks for encounter that treat making as a form of listening and
objects as witnesses to ecological change.
Christopher St. John is Professor of Art at San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in public collections including the University of Alaska Museum of the North and the Hawai’i State Art Museum
